Their Story

The Loading Dock was born from founder Philip Freeman’s own experience growing a business in Raleigh.

Philip began his entrepreneurial journey in his garage, where he spent three years developing Murphy’s Naturals. As the company grew, he leased his first dedicated space, only to outgrow it within six months. Soon, he was juggling storage units and subleased warehouses, experiencing firsthand how difficult it could be to scale a business within the constraints of traditional leases.

That journey eventually brought Murphy’s Naturals to Dock 1053, where the company expanded from 2,000 to 20,000 square feet. With additional space available, Philip saw an opportunity to create the kind of flexible environment he wished he had while growing his own business.

The result was The Loading Dock: a shared workspace where entrepreneurs and established teams alike can work, meet, collaborate, store inventory, and grow on their own terms.

Its flagship campus at Dock 1053 has been a place for business and innovation for decades. Originally built in 1955 as a regional distribution center for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, the property has been reimagined for a new generation of Raleigh businesses.

Today, The Loading Dock continues that legacy by creating spaces where ideas can take shape, businesses can grow, and Raleigh’s entrepreneurial community can connect.
